Steamscorch Mine is a working malachite mine tucked behind the Braidwood Inn in Kynesgrove, a short walk south of Windhelm. It has no map marker and counts as part of Kynesgrove, but it’s worth a visit for glass-armor ore, an Alteration trainer and a free enchanting book.
What you’ll find
- Seven malachite ore veins: two right inside the entrance, one before the main chamber beside a woodpile, and four in the last chamber (two on the ground, two up on the catwalks).
- A smelter right outside the entrance.
- A cart outside holding three refined malachite ingots and a malachite ore. These belong to the mine, and a guard often stands nearby.
- About 21 fly amanita growing along the tunnels.
- Miners and residents: Kjeld, Kjeld the Younger, Ganna Uriel, Gemma Uriel, Roggi Knot-Beard and Dravynea the Stoneweaver, who trains Alteration.
Quests
Bring some Frost Salts to Dravynea and she’ll reward you with a free Alteration skill point. She also becomes eligible for marriage.
Notable items
- Complete Catalogue of Enchantments for Armor (Enchanting skill book), on a table at the end of the first tunnel.
Tips
Kjeld buys malachite ore at a fair price, but the ore and ingots taken from the cart stay flagged as stolen. Get caught grabbing them and you’ll pick up a bounty in Eastmarch. Mine the veins instead and you’ve done honest work. If a vein refuses to cooperate, leave and come back, or just swing an equipped pickaxe at it.
Good to know
During A Blade in the Dark, many Kynesgrove locals may hide in here while Sahloknir is raised nearby. Can’t blame them.
