Roggi Knot-Beard is a Nord miner in Kynesgrove, just south of Windhelm, and arguably the friendliest face in town. He also has a serious relationship with mead. Most of what he says is about drinking it, brewing it, or wondering where the bees get their honey.
Where to find them
During the day he is in Steamscorch Mine or the Braidwood Inn. At night he sometimes sleeps outside the inn.
Quests
- Find Roggi Knot-Beard’s Ancestral Shield – Roggi tells you his ancestor Lenne helped found Kynesgrove, then wandered into an unexplored cave, got eaten by monsters and took the family shield with him. Find it and Roggi offers to join you.
- A Few Words with You – Iddra wants you to sort out the tab Roggi has run up at her inn. You can settle it by persuasion, a bribe or a brawl. Roggi is too proud to accept charity, even though he can never pay.
Follower & marriage
After you return the shield, Roggi can join you as a follower, and if you wear an Amulet of Mara he becomes a marriage candidate. He can also be recruited into the Blades, like most followers, and serve as a steward (Hearthfire).
Be honest with yourself, though: Roggi is a miner, not a warrior. His level tops out at 20, the lowest cap among followers alongside Sven, and at that point he has only around 208 health. His best skills are Smithing, Alchemy and Enchanting, with weapons and archery coming second. He starts with his everyday clothes, a hunting bow and iron arrows, plus a steel dagger, a gold ruby necklace and the ancestral shield. He prefers light armor, has average morale and may run away when badly hurt. He won’t commit crimes for you, but he will defend you if guards or angry locals come after you.
Personality & relationships
Roggi is easygoing and kind. He chats with Iddra about her children and his drinking, debates with his friend Kjeld why Riften mead beats the Whiterun stuff, and gently points out when Kjeld’s jokes would upset his wife. He is also the one local that Dravynea considers half-decent to her, and he offers to deal with Kjeld if he ever bothers her too much. He even worries about the bees at Goldenglow, since happy bees make the best honey.
Good to know
- If you attack Kynesgrove, he may refuse to follow you afterwards.
- If a dragon attacks town and he isn’t with you, he may run instead of fight.
