Hrothmund’s Barrow

Cave tomb of Hrothmund the Red, founder of Thirsk Mead Hall, northwest of Snowclad Ruins – visited in Retaking Thirsk, with hidden silver and gold ore.

Hrothmund’s Barrow is a cave tomb on Solstheim, added with the Dragonborn expansion. It lies northwest of the Snowclad Ruins and west of the Headwaters of Harstrad. This is the resting place of Hrothmund the Red, the man who founded Thirsk Mead Hall, and you’ll come here while helping his successors.

What you’ll find

  • Hrothmund the Red – present only as a voice. He doesn’t need a body to have opinions.
  • Bujold the Unworthy – the Thirsk leader appears here during part of Retaking Thirsk.
  • Hidden door – after the first flight of stairs, look on the right-hand side of the passage for a concealed door, opened with a pull chain to its left.
  • Ore veins – a gold ore vein to the right of the first stairs, and a silver ore vein in the hidden room.
  • Ingredients – Fly Amanita grows here.

Quests

The barrow is part of Retaking Thirsk, the quest you get from Bujold at Bujold’s Retreat.

Notable items

  • Chest behind the hidden door
  • Gold and silver ore veins
  • Hrothmund’s Axe (visible, but not obtainable)

Tips

Don’t rush past the first stairs. Most players stride straight on and miss the pull chain, which means missing a chest and a silver vein in one go. Bring a pickaxe so you can grab both the gold and the silver while you’re here. And no, you can’t take Hrothmund’s Axe no matter how many times you click on it – it’s strictly for display. Admire it, sigh, move on.

The barrow is small, so it makes a good quick detour if you’re already exploring the northern half of the island around the Snowclad Ruins.

Good to know

Hrothmund’s name lives on in the mead hall he founded, and the barrow is the closest you get to meeting him. For a man who’s been dead for some time, he still has a surprisingly strong presence.
