Pinepeak Cavern is a small, out-of-the-way cave north of Ivarstead, near Lake Geir and the waterways that run down toward the Darkwater River. It lies north of the bridge leading to the Seven Thousand Steps up the Throat of the World. Don’t expect a sprawling dungeon – in Skyrim it’s a quick stop, mostly interesting for the history buried behind its rubble.
What you’ll find
- A small entrance chamber that serves as a bear den.
- Bears that, according to the lore, sometimes wander out and bother nearby settlements.
- Collapsed tunnels: by the Fourth Era most of the cave has fallen in, leaving only the den near the entrance.
Quests
Because its bears have a habit of troubling the locals, Pinepeak can be a target for an animal extermination job from the Companions.
Tips
Bring enough firepower for an angry bear or two and you’ll be in and out in minutes. It pairs well with a trip to Ivarstead – a short detour north of the bridge rather than a full expedition. If you came looking for a hero’s tomb full of treasure, adjust your expectations: the bears have the lease now. Think of Pinepeak less as a dungeon and more as a lore footnote you can walk into.
Good to know
Long before Skyrim, Pinepeak was the burial tomb of Hakra, one of the Five Hundred Companions and one of the warriors who slew the giant leader Sinmur. In the Second Era the Worm Cult tried to enslave Hakra’s spirit here to strengthen Sinmur, but an agent of the Ebonheart Pact stopped them and freed it. Hakra later rose to Sovngarde with Valdur and the other Companions, leaving the tomb empty – which is why a cave with such a heroic past now just smells of bear.
