If an ordinary troll is a bad day, a Frost Troll is a bad week. It behaves just like its common cousin but is stronger and far more durable, and it makes its home in the coldest parts of the province. Picture a hulking, ape-like brute with long muscular arms, clawed fingers, a mouth crammed with jagged teeth, a third eye in the middle of its forehead and a shaggy white coat.
Frost trolls attack most things that move and rarely back down, even from much stronger foes. They aren’t fast, but they make up for it with crushing arm swings and claw strikes – and they heal themselves throughout the fight at about two health points per second.
Where to find them
Look for them wherever there is snow:
- Winterhold, The Pale and Eastmarch.
- The northern parts of Solstheim in the Dragonborn add-on.
- Caves, which they particularly like, and old ruins such as Labyrinthian.
- The Seven Thousand Steps up the Throat of the World – almost every Dragonborn meets at least one on the climb to High Hrothgar during The Way of the Voice.
A frost troll also hunts in the Forgotten Vale, where it regularly kills vale sabre cats.
Notes
- A loading screen calls the frost troll the most fearsome of its kind in Skyrim, and the hunting guide Troll Slaying advises calmly backing away and only hunting trolls well prepared.
- Expect frost trolls to be hard work until roughly level 30, longer still if you have no strong fire magic or fire-enchanted gear.
- Don’t confuse it with the armored troll, which has its own page.
- Troll Fat is the main reason to hunt them, besides survival.
