Captain Veleth

Captain Modyn Veleth leads the Redoran Guard in Raven Rock and sends the Dragonborn after the ash spawn and the long-dead General Carius.
“Some consider my methods harsh, but playing the coddling nursemaid has never won a battle.”

Captain Modyn Veleth is a Dunmer soldier and the commander of the Redoran Guard stationed in Raven Rock, the Dark Elf colony on Solstheim (Dragonborn). His men are hand-picked warriors of House Redoran, and their main job is keeping Councilor Morvayn alive. Veleth is proud of having trained them himself and will happily tell you they are a cut above ordinary town guards. Like his troops he wears bonemold armor, though his is the guard variant, and he often carries an Elven battleaxe. He is a strict, no-nonsense officer who openly admits his methods are harsh.

Where to find them

You will most likely meet him for the first time at the Old Attius Farm, where he and his patrol have been ambushed by ash spawn. He waits there until you start his quest, then heads back to Raven Rock to patrol with his men and to join the defence whenever ash spawn throw themselves at the Bulwark. Every morning between 8 and 10 he slips into The Retching Netch for a quiet meeting with Dreyla Alor.

Quests

March of the Dead is his big one. After you save him from the ash spawn, he asks you to search the farm, where a note turns up signed by General Falx Carius. Since Carius commanded the Imperial garrison at Fort Frostmoth and supposedly died when Red Mountain erupted more than two centuries ago, Veleth is baffled and sends you to the fort to find out what is going on. You can offer help for free or haggle for pay, and if you brush him off he will keep asking until you agree. Bring news of Carius’s end and he passes on a reward from the councilor.

Once you have rescued him, he also hands out Recipe for Distraction, asking you to sniff out a stash of Emberbrand Wine his own guards have hidden somewhere in town. After both March of the Dead and The Final Descent are done, he tracks you down for Served Cold, urging you to report to Second Councilor Arano as soon as possible and refusing to say more.

Personality & relationships

Veleth carries some bitterness about his career: he once led more than a hundred soldiers, and he says his luck turned when his homeland was destroyed. Still, he is loyal to Morvayn and fiercely protective of his men, and losing even one of them clearly stings. After the mine reopens he grumbles about stretching his guard thinner, but welcomes any reaver attack as a chance to prove his troops.

He is also secretly seeing Dreyla Alor, keeping it quiet because her father disapproves. Ask him about the strange shrine being built outside town, or about Miraak, and his confident manner slips into vague, half-remembered answers about a temple on the island.

Good to know

Veleth is essential, so you cannot lose him in the many ash spawn raids. He is also the one Redoran Guard who never makes snide passing remarks at Argonian or Khajiit characters.
