Fort Frostmoth is an abandoned Imperial fort on Solstheim, added with the Dragonborn expansion. It sits east of Raven Rock along the island’s southern half. The Empire built it, then walked away when they left the island after Raven Rock Mine went into decline. Its new garrison is a lot less friendly – and a lot more ashen.
What you’ll find
- Ash spawn under the command of the undead General Falx Carius.
- Albino spiders and Flame Cloaked Spiders lurking in the darker corners.
- Turn right after entering and head down a flight of stairs to find a Master-locked gate (opened with the Fort Frostmoth Key). Behind it: five bottles of Cyrodilic Brandy, a barrel of Moon Sugar, the ingredients for Elsweyr Fondue and a boss-level chest.
- Next to that room, a cobwebbed area holds Albino Spider Pods, two Heart Stone veins and three Ruby Geodes.
- Turn left after entering for a room of Imperial apparel and an East Empire Company Strongbox.
- A crypt where Ildari’s Journal lies on the main coffin, next to the bag holding the fort key.
- The skeletal remains of Maximian Axius.
Quests
March of the Dead – after you find the note titled Declaration of War, the trail leads here. Killing General Falx Carius ends the ash spawn attacks on Raven Rock.
Notable items
- Champion’s Cudgel, looted from General Falx Carius.
- A Letter to Selina, parts I–IV.
- The book The Arcturian Heresy.
- Ildari’s Journal and the Fort Frostmoth Key.
- Boss chest, Cyrodilic Brandy and Moon Sugar behind the locked gate.
Tips
Grab the key from the crypt and you can skip picking that Master lock entirely. Ash spawn love fire, so frost or plain steel is a better bet than flames, and keep an eye out for the burning spiders too. Bring a pickaxe for the Heart Stone veins and geodes in the spider nook – the cobwebs are the only thing guarding them.
Good to know
East of the fort you may spot a wizard casting a spell and launching himself high into the air – a nod to the infamous flying wizard Tarhiel from Morrowind. Oblivion veterans may also remember Neville mentioning that he was once stationed here.
