Mammoth

Mammoths roam Skyrim's tundra under the watch of giants. Where to find them, how dangerous they are and why hunters want their tusks.

Mammoths are the gentle, woolly giants of the tundra – gentle until something attacks them or their herd. Then they charge, trample and toss, and they have enough health to keep it up for a while.

Where to find them

Almost always near a giant camp, especially on the plains around Whiterun. Attack a mammoth and the giant herding it will come running, so plan accordingly.

Abilities & attacks

  • Tusk swings and trample
  • Charges at attackers
  • Very high health

How to beat it

Fight from a distance or high ground. Attacking a mammoth makes nearby giants hostile, and attacking a giant does the same to its mammoths – so decide first whether you want to fight both. Mammoths are clumsy and often get stuck on rocks, trees or in deep water, which gives you a safe spot to shoot from. Don't count on paralysis or Unrelenting Force; they only stagger them.

Loot & harvestables

Mammoth Tusk (always)
Mammoth Snout (always)
Small treasure (sometimes)

Lore & trivia

With a grand soul, mammoths are a favourite target for enchanters filling grand soul gems. Normal reanimation spells don't work on them.
