Orotheim

Small three-room bandit cave southwest of Morthal and north of Talking Stone Camp, with a hidden exit, smithing tools and a One-handed skill book.

Orotheim is a compact three-room cave southwest of Morthal, just north of the giants at Talking Stone Camp. A band of bandits and their leader have turned it into a hunting lodge, and judging by their chief’s journal, the hunting is going badly. It is short, simple and turns up in a surprising number of quests, so there is a fair chance something will send you here.

What you’ll find

  • Several bandits spread across the three main rooms, plus their Bandit Chief.
  • A pull chain in the last room that opens a concealed door back to the entrance, so no backtracking.
  • Facilities: cooking pot, anvil, grindstone, tanning rack and hay piles to sleep on.
  • Two chests with leveled and random loot inside, and a locked chest beside a skeleton at the foot of a waterfall west of the entrance.
  • Mushrooms galore: Blisterwort, Bleeding Crown, Imp Stool, Namira’s Rot and Fly Amanita.

Quests

The steward in Morthal can post a bounty on the bandit leader here. Orotheim is also one of the possible targets for a long list of radiant and side quests: Aela the Huntress‘s Silver Hand jobs, Amulet of the Moon for Kharjo, the hunt for Meridia’s Beacon in The Break of Dawn, Amulets of Night Power, Rings of Blood Magic, Ancient Technology, Lost Relic (all Dawnguard), rescuing a kidnapped spouse, a Fetch Me That Book! request and Retrieval. A courier’s letter may point you here as well.

Notable items

  • One-handed skill book Mace Etiquette.
  • Possibly a copy of N’Gasta! Kvata! Kvakis!
  • The Bandit Chief’s journal about their mammoth-hunting efforts.

Tips

Grab the locked chest by the waterfall before you go in – it is easy to walk right past. Inside, the rooms are small, so archers and sneak attackers can pick bandits off one at a time. Use the pull chain at the end to pop out by the entrance instead of walking back. If you plan to deal with both this cave and the giants, there is a little story to it: the chief’s journal says the gang keeps trying to bag a mammoth at Talking Stone Camp and keeps getting chased off by the giants.

Good to know

Kill the giants first and the bandits get bolder: a group will head out, fail to bring down a mammoth anyway, and limp back to Orotheim. Some hunters just never learn.
