Vuljotnaak

A named dragon raised by Alduin from the burial mound near Fort Sungard in the Reach; a comparatively easy kill among named dragons.

Vuljotnaak is one of the named dragons of Skyrim, a resident of the Reach who patrols the skies between Fort Sungard and Broken Fang Cave. His name, written Vul-Jot-Naak in the dragon tongue, translates as “Dark Maw Eat” – an appetite-forward name for a dragon who, by most accounts, is easier to bring down than many of his kin. He uses both fire and frost breath, so prepare for either.

Where to find him

Vuljotnaak rests at the Great Henge dragon burial mound, northeast of Sunderstone Gorge and not far from Bloated Man’s Grotto, in the Reach. Once awake, he circles the area between Fort Sungard and Broken Fang Cave.

Resurrection by Alduin

He is one of the dragons you can watch Alduin bring back to life. This window opens once Diplomatic Immunity has started and closes when Alduin’s Wall begins, during the second act of the main quest. If you reach his mound before Alduin does, while the column of light still shines over it, attacking the ground or shouting at it makes Vuljotnaak speak from below in plain speech, inviting you to talk only if you have something worth hearing.

Notes

  • With the Dragonborn DLC and all three words of Bend Will, Vuljotnaak is one of the named dragons you can ride.
  • According to the in-game Atlas of Dragons, a town called Granite Hill was meant to lie near his burial mound.
  • Like every dragon, he leaves Dragon Bones and Dragon Scales and a dragon soul for your shouts.

How to beat it

Vuljotnaak is considered one of the easier named dragons. Since he can breathe both fire and frost, a general magic resistance helps more than a single elemental potion. Ground him with Dragonrend if you have it, or keep shooting with a bow while he circles, then finish him in melee once he lands.
