The elk is one of the most familiar sights in the Skyrim countryside: a large, antlered grazer that bolts the moment anything dangerous comes near. It is entirely passive, has no interest in fighting you, and exists mostly to keep hunters, bears and wolves fed. With 50 health it is a little sturdier than a deer, but a patient archer will still bring one down without much trouble.
Elk are often seen fleeing from predators or from human hunters, and they sometimes travel in mixed groups with deer. That flight instinct is what makes them tricky: a missed shot usually sends the animal sprinting across the tundra, and you end up chasing it for longer than the hunt was worth.
Where to find them
Elk are among the most common animals in the province and turn up across the open wilds rather than at fixed spots. Grasslands, forest edges and the plains around Whiterun Hold are typical hunting grounds, and herds are frequently mixed with deer. If you hear hooves and see a flash of antlers on a hillside, chances are good it is an elk running from something larger.
When an elk turns hostile
An elk never starts a fight on its own, but outside influence can change that. A Spriggan can drive nearby animals to attack, and so can frenzy magic such as Fury. In both cases the elk lashes out at whatever is closest, which may well be you. Its attack is weak, so this is more a surprise than a real threat.
Notes
A dead elk can be brought back with Raise Zombie and other Conjuration reanimation spells. The reanimated animal will not fight on your behalf, but it does work as a distraction that pulls enemy attention away from you.
Bulls and cows differ visibly: males are bigger, darker and carry heavier antlers. Their broad, palmate antlers look nothing like a modern elk’s, and the design is commonly thought to be inspired by the extinct Irish elk (Megaloceros). Hides from elk feed into the same leather economy as deer, so a hunter heading to a tannery or to Smithing work will find them just as useful.
