Fort Sungard is a run-down fortress west of Whiterun and southeast of Rorikstead. When you first find it, the Forsworn have made it one of their many encampments, but during the Civil War it can also end up in the hands of the Stormcloaks or the Imperial Legion. With five separate buildings to explore, two skill books and a full set of crafting stations, it is a solid stop for any adventurer heading west.
What you’ll find
- Fort Sungard Tower: the main building – three floors plus roof access. A lower door leads into the Oubliette.
- Fort Sungard Oubliette: a small two-storey tower at the back. A killing hole in the basement drops into a little cave with its own exit.
- Fort Sungard Annex: one section with a jail cell, and a lower door out to a balcony with a forge, grindstone and workbench.
- Fort Sungard Shrine: a shrine, an alchemy lab in the basement and a leveled strongbox. The shrine changes with the owners: Kynareth for the Forsworn, Akatosh for the Imperials and Talos for the Stormcloaks.
- Fort Sungard Muster: sleeping quarters and a mess hall with a kitchen below, a usable cooking pot, a ladder to the roof and a sewer leading outside.
Quests
- The Battle for Fort Sungard – a Civil War assault for either the Stormcloaks or the Imperial Legion.
- Ghorza gra-Bagol wants a copy of The Last Scabbard of Akrash to help her apprentice improve. Hand it over for a boost to Smithing – reading it first means you get the book’s bonus too.
Notable items
- The Last Scabbard of Akrash (Smithing), on a table in the Muster sleeping quarters.
- A Guide to Better Thieving (Pickpocket), down the hole in the Oubliette, along with the Fort Sungard Jail Key.
- Two moonstone ores on a wagon inside the tower.
- A leveled strongbox in the Shrine.
Tips
The Oubliette’s killing hole is not just for prisoners – it is your shortcut to a skill book and a quiet back exit if a fight goes sideways. Read the Akrash book before delivering it so you squeeze out every point of Smithing.
Civil War planners take note: the Imperials cannot simply clear out the Forsworn and move in here. This fort only changes hands after its region is traded to the Stormcloaks during Season Unending and then captured. Players chasing the War Hero achievement usually aim for a different trade, so think ahead before the peace talks.
Good to know
Sungard has a grim past. According to Rislav the Righteous, a battle fought here in 1E 478 cost Kjoric the White, then High King of Skyrim, his life. Not the most cheerful place to bed down for the night.
