Gargoyle

Gargoyles are stone guardians of Skyrim's vampires (Dawnguard). How to spot them posing as statues, their life-draining claws and how to beat them.

Gargoyles are winged stone creatures that serve the vampires of the Dawnguard add-on. Their favourite trick is standing perfectly still among real statues, then waking up when you walk past.

Where to find them

Above all at Castle Volkihar, the vampire stronghold, where many of them pose as statues. They also turn up alongside vampires and Death Hounds when vampires attack in the wild or raid towns.

Spotting a fake statue

While disguised, a gargoyle can’t be damaged at all. Aim a spell like Soul Trap at a suspicious statue: on a real statue it fails, on a gargoyle its health bar appears.

Vampire Lords can also take a perk to summon a gargoyle of their own.

Abilities & attacks

  • Claw attacks that absorb your health
  • Statue disguise – invulnerable until it wakes
  • High natural damage resistance

How to beat it

Don't waste poisons or paralysis on them. Their armor-like resistance makes magic and hard-hitting power attacks the best options. Keep your health topped up, since every claw hit heals them.

Loot & harvestables

Leveled gems and ore
