Fortify Smithing Potions

Blacksmith’s potions improve weapon and armor tempering by 20 to 50 percent for 30 seconds, letting smiths squeeze extra quality out of gear.

Known in game as Blacksmith’s potions, this family makes improving weapons and armor more effective for 30 seconds. A smith who drinks one before working at a grindstone or workbench gets better results from each improvement, which adds up to noticeably stronger gear. They are a natural fit for warriors who craft their own equipment and for anyone combining Smithing with Alchemy to push their arms and armor as far as they will go.

Where to find them

Blacksmith’s potions appear in vendor stock and as loot. They are leveled, so the stronger Philter and Elixir become more likely as your level rises.

Brewing your own

The Alchemy skill lets you brew them yourself. These ingredients share the Fortify Smithing effect:

Pair any two at an alchemy lab. Trying an ingredient by eating it reveals one of its effects if you have not discovered them yet.

Tips

  • Line up everything you want to improve before drinking, because 30 seconds passes quickly while browsing menus.
  • The bonus only affects improving existing items, so save it for the grindstone and workbench rather than forging new pieces.

Where to find it

  • Sold by vendors who stock potions
  • Found as leveled loot; stronger tiers appear at higher player levels
  • Brewed with Alchemy
