Unlike potions that refill lost Health, this family raises the ceiling itself. For 60 seconds your maximum Health climbs by 20 to 100 points depending on the tier, which makes these bottles a smart opener before a dragon, a boss or a crowded Draugr crypt. Warriors without healing spells lean on them heavily, and they work nicely alongside Restore Health potions: raise the cap first, then top it up.

Where to find them
Like most stock potions in Skyrim, these bottles turn up as loot in the world and in the inventories of characters, and vendors that deal in potions can have them for sale. The family is leveled, so the weaker versions dominate early on and the stronger Philters and Elixirs become more common as the Dragonborn gains levels.
Brewing your own
With the Alchemy skill you can make these yourself. Six ingredients carry Fortify Health: Bear Claws, Blue Mountain Flower, Giant’s Toe, Glowing Mushroom, Hanging Moss and Wheat. Giant’s Toe deserves special mention: adding it to the mix stretches the duration from 60 to 300 seconds, which also makes the finished potion considerably more valuable.
Tips
Because a potion bought or looted only lasts a minute, drink it just before the fight starts. A self-made version with Giant’s Toe can cover an entire dungeon room or a long dragon battle.
