Griefstricken Chef

The Griefstricken Chef is a Nord contractor in Dawnstar's Windpeak Inn who hires the Dragonborn for an assassination after the Dark Brotherhood is restored.

The Griefstricken Chef is a nameless Nord who turns up in the Windpeak Inn in Dawnstar. Despite the sad title, his role is grimly practical: he wants somebody dead, and he is willing to pay the Dark Brotherhood to make it happen.

Where to find them

He stays in the Windpeak Inn. After handing over the job, he simply wanders around the inn until the deed is done, so he is easy to find again if you need him.

Quests

He is one of the contractors for The Dark Brotherhood Forever, the repeatable contract quest that opens up once the Brotherhood is back on its feet. When you meet him he offers a leveled sum of gold up front to have a target assassinated. Who the target is and why he grieves is left for the job itself to reveal – he’s a client, not a storyteller.

He is marked as essential, so you can’t accidentally (or deliberately) shut down the contract by killing the client.

Personality & relationships

He carries a copy of the Brotherhood’s dark ritual text, A Kiss, Sweet Mother, which says a lot about how he got in touch with Sithis’s servants. He also has an iron dagger on him, though he is clearly happy to leave the stabbing to professionals.

Good to know

If you have not finished the Dark Brotherhood questline, you won’t see him at all. The Brotherhood’s own refuge in this town, the Dawnstar Sanctuary, is not far from the inn.
