Nils

Elderly Nord cook at Candlehearth Hall in Windhelm who spends his days chopping firewood and quietly grumbling about Imperials.

Nils is an old Nord who works as the cook at Candlehearth Hall in Windhelm. When he isn’t feeding the inn’s guests, he is out splitting logs to keep the city’s fires burning. He works for Elda Early-Dawn, and he even wrote a recipe for chaurus pie because Susanna asked for one.

Where to find them

Nils has a busy, predictable day. He sleeps in his own room at Candlehearth Hall from 10 pm to 8 am, then chops wood at the block near the marketplace for two hours. Around 10 am he drops the firewood off outside Sadri’s Used Wares, goes back for another two hours of chopping and then delivers that load to the Blacksmith Quarters. From 4 pm he is back at the inn for the rest of the day.

Personality & relationships

He is a no-nonsense worker who likes to point out that a good fire needs kindling as well as big logs. Elda appreciates how hard he works, but she has told Brunwulf Free-Winter she wouldn’t trust Nils to run the inn if she ever stepped down.

Nils has no love for the Empire. He considers Imperials stodgy, and while chopping wood he likes to imagine an Imperial soldier’s head on the stump – which certainly explains his enthusiasm for the job. He’s counted among the Stormcloaks‘ supporters.

Good to know

The game files list him as an “Elder” rather than a Nord, but he calls himself a Nord in his recipe – so a Nord he is.
