Nurelion is an old Altmer alchemist who owns The White Phial, an alchemy shop in Windhelm that he named after the relic he has chased his entire life. He runs it with his long-suffering apprentice, Quintus Navale. Nurelion is sick, cranky and running out of time – and he knows it.
Where to find them
He is in his shop, usually buried in research and in no mood for visitors who don’t plan to spend money. After the White Phial quest he takes to his bed upstairs and stays there.
Quests
The White Phial: Nurelion is convinced he has finally pinned down where the Phial lies, but he is far too frail to fetch it himself. You go instead. The relic you bring back is cracked and useless, and the disappointment is too much for him: he hands you a measly reward and collapses into bed, sick and dying.
Repairing the Phial: later, Quintus finds a way to mend the relic with rare ingredients. Once it is fixed, Nurelion gets to see his life’s work complete at last – and dies shortly after.
He can also be a pickpocketing target for Delvin Mallory, who may want a ruby lifted from him. If he is already bedridden, you won’t be able to pick his pocket at all.
Services
Until his health gives out, he sells potions, tonics and alchemy supplies.
Personality & relationships
Nurelion is famously short-tempered. He snaps at Quintus for asking questions, for reading on the job and for not grinding the snowberries fast enough, and he treats customers as loiterers until proven otherwise. Underneath it all, he admits he is only so hard on his apprentice because he fears he doesn’t have much time left.
Good to know
Vampires take note: while he lies dying, he can be fed on again and again – as long as you never finish Repairing the Phial. Stealing from him may also bring hired thugs to your door, even during the quest. Despite his sour attitude, he can show up as a guest at your wedding.
