Raerek is an elderly Nord who serves as steward to Jarl Igmund in Markarth – and, just to keep things in the family, he is also the Jarl’s uncle. He advised Igmund’s father before him and now runs the household, keeps the treasury and commands the palace guards.
Where to find them
He usually sits beside the Jarl in Understone Keep. If Markarth falls to the Stormcloaks, he goes into exile with Igmund and Faleen at the Blue Palace in Solitude.
Quests
The Steward’s Potion: Bothela sends you to deliver a potion to him. He’s embarrassed, grateful for your discretion and pays you – the potion’s name suggests what the problem is.
Compelling Tribute (Stormcloaks): Raerek secretly worships Talos, and Ulfric’s side wants to use that against him. Show him his inscribed Amulet of Talos and he pulls you aside. He refuses to join Ulfric, whom he doesn’t trust, but to keep the secret he’ll either tip you off about a heavily guarded wagon of silver and weapons heading for Solitude, or pay you a fat purse.
Services
Once the Jarl approves, Raerek sells Vlindrel Hall for 8,000 gold, plus decorations for 4,200 (4,900 if you swap the alchemy lab for a children’s bedroom, Hearthfire).
Personality & relationships
Raerek is the voice of caution at court. His view of the Forsworn is that they know every rock in the hills, so the city should defend itself and wait them out rather than send the Legion into ambushes – Igmund finds that cowardly. He wants the Silver-Blood family locked up for supporting Ulfric, an idea Igmund rejects, since they own the very prison he’d use. He also frets endlessly about collapsing trade. Even blackmailed, he insists his only loyalties are to his nephew and his city.
