Sybille Stentor

Sharp-tongued Breton court wizard of Solitude’s Blue Palace, a secret vampire who trains Destruction and sells spell tomes.
“I have so very many ways to deal with people, very few of them pleasant.”

Sybille Stentor is the Breton court wizard at the Blue Palace in Solitude – and, though she’ll never say it, a vampire. She has served Solitude’s rulers for more than twenty years, starting under Torygg’s father Istlod, and she helped raise Torygg when he was a child. She was in the court the day Ulfric Stormcloak shouted the young High King apart, and she still remembers it as a gruesome day.

Where to find them

In the Blue Palace, usually near the throne room. After you complete The Wolf Queen Awakened she retreats to her own room nearby and spends most of her time asleep in bed – she’ll wake up when you talk to her, then go straight back to sleep.

Quests

Kill the Vampire: Sybille asks you to wipe out the vampires lurking in Pinemoon Cave. Yes, the irony is noted. Once it’s done, many items in the Blue Palace count as yours to take rather than steal. Despite being a Destruction trainer, she rewards you with a point in Illusion.

Services

She offers Expert-level Destruction training and sells spell tomes, robes and other mage supplies. If you want proper lessons beyond that, she’ll brush you off and point you to the College of Winterhold.

Personality & relationships

Sybille is impatient, haughty and makes no secret of it. She pesters steward Falk Firebeard for expensive reagents, insisting the city depends on her wards and divinations, and dismisses Elisif the Fair as a jarl who only got the job because her husband died. She enjoys needling Falk and Bryling with hints about their “meetings”, and she waves off Varnius Junius‘s report of strange lights near Dragon Bridge as superstition.

Her dark side shows in what others say. Ahtar mentions that she now and then takes a “volunteer” from the Castle Dour dungeon, and Melaran hints that the headsman’s axe isn’t the worst fate a prisoner can meet. Raise her opinion of you, though, and she softens noticeably and even flirts a little.

Good to know

Ask why she looks so young and she simply says she has aged well. (Dawnguard) changes her eyes to the new vampire look. Like other vampires she drops vampire dust. If she dies, Melaran becomes court wizard but doesn’t sell spell tomes, so you lose a merchant.
