Mzulft

Dwemer ruin north of Riften and southeast of Windhelm housing the Oculory, a must-visit in Revealing the Unseen, full of Falmer, chaurus and automatons.

Mzulft is an ancient Dwemer ruin on the western side of the mountains, a long trek southeast of Windhelm, north of Riften and a short way directly north of Cragslane Cavern. Its big attraction is the Oculory, a huge Dwemer device that scholars from the Synod have been poking at. You can’t get past the inner door until Mirabelle Ervine sends you here in Revealing the Unseen, because the key is on the body of Gavros Plinius, who only appears once that quest is running.

What you’ll find

  • Dwarven automatons, including spider workers that drop gems, and a leveled Animunculus guarding the Oculory key.
  • Falmer and chaurus deeper in, plus chaurus hunters (Dawnguard).
  • Synod researchers Paratus Decimius and Nerien around the Oculory.
  • Lots of trip wires and spike traps on doors.
  • The Oculory: it gathers starlight, splits it and – once calibrated with a focusing crystal – projects a map of Tamriel marking great sources of magical power.

Quests

  • Revealing the Unseen – calibrate the Oculory with magic and Dwemer tech for the College of Winterhold.
  • Arniel’s Endeavor.
  • Lost to the Ages (Dawnguard).

Tips

Mzulft does not restock enemies or loot after your first visit, so grab every bit of Dwemer scrap while you’re there – it’s one of the best ingot farms in the game, but only once. The Oculory key sits in a chest in a locked room at the eastern end; head straight east from the locked Oculory door. The roof chest outside needs a daring jump, Whirlwind Sprint or a careful descent from the rocks above.

Avoid clearing the ruin before starting Revealing the Unseen, as that can reportedly make the quest unobtainable.

Good to know

The Dwarven Storeroom lies just south of the main entrance, and the Oculory room closely mirrors the one in the Tower of Mzark.
