Destruction Scrolls

All fourteen Destruction scrolls in Skyrim, from Firebolt to Blizzard, with effects, prices, form IDs and the places where each one turns up.

Every Destruction scroll in Skyrim holds a single offensive spell from the Destruction school and reproduces that spell’s effect when read. The set covers all three elements – fire, frost and shock – in the same shapes the spells come in: quick bolts, area blasts, runes laid on the ground, and cloaks that burn or freeze anything standing next to you. That makes them a handy emergency weapon for characters who never trained the school, and a cheap way to try out a spell before learning it.

Where to find them

Most of these scrolls are stocked by spell merchants, and the stronger ones also show up with court wizards and at the College of Winterhold. The cheaper bolts and the Ice Storm scroll also appear in general stores, dungeon chests and as random loot, and hostile mages sometimes carry a Fireball scroll. A few have fixed placements worth knowing:

  • Fireball – Bleak Falls Barrow, on a table next to a Paralysis potion right after the skeever fight, before you catch up with Arvel the Swift. Faralda may also sell it.
  • Blizzard – Bloodlet Throne, Fort Amol (the prison), Calixto’s House of Curiosities and the upper floor of the Palace of the Kings in Windhelm, the Inner Sanctum of the Forgotten Vale (Dawnguard), and for sale at the College.
  • Fire Storm – on a podium in Dimhollow Crypt (Dawnguard), besides court wizards, the College and dungeon loot.
  • Chain Lightning – on a workbench among Dwarven metal ingots in the Aedrome of Mzulft, and outside Bloodskal Barrow (Dragonborn).
  • Ice Spike – in Fellglow Keep during Hitting the Books.

Highlights

  • Blizzard and Fire Storm are the priciest scrolls of the school at 500 gold each. Blizzard keeps freezing targets for 10 seconds and drains Stamina as well, while Fire Storm erupts around the reader for 75 points, hitting hardest at close range.
  • Chain Lightning strikes for 50 shock damage, burns half that from Magicka and then jumps to another enemy – good against groups of spellcasters.
  • Fireball covers a 15 foot radius for 50 damage, and enemies already burning take extra.
  • Ice Storm is a rolling whirlwind dealing 50 frost damage per second to Health and Stamina.
  • The three rune scrolls are traps: place one on a surface and it detonates for 40 damage when a foe gets close.
  • The three cloak scrolls last a full minute, damaging every melee attacker by 8 points per second, with frost also hitting Stamina and shock also hitting Magicka.

Tips

Pick the element to suit the enemy: frost scrolls wear down Stamina, so they suit warriors, while shock scrolls drain Magicka and suit mages. Runes are best set down in a corridor before you open a door or spring an ambush.

Where to find it

  • Spell merchants, court wizards and the College of Winterhold
  • General stores (Ice Storm) and random dungeon loot
  • Fixed spots: Bleak Falls Barrow (Fireball), Mzulft (Chain Lightning), Fellglow Keep (Ice Spike), Dimhollow Crypt (Fire Storm), Bloodlet Throne and Windhelm (Blizzard)
