Amulets of Night Power

Feran Sadri sends a Vampire Lord after two amulets once gifted by Molag Bal to ancient vampires, now in the wrong hands.

Amulets of Night Power is a vampire-side quest from the Dawnguard add-on. Castle Volkihar‘s alchemist Feran Sadri has heard that two amulets, once handed to ancient Vampire Lords by Molag Bal himself, have ended up with owners who do not deserve them. He would like them back on a proper Vampire Lord’s neck, and you happen to have one.

How to start

The quest is only on offer to a Dragonborn who sided with the vampires, so you need to meet all of the following before Feran will bring it up:

  • You accepted Harkon’s gift and became a Vampire Lord at the end of Bloodline, joining the Volkihar Clan.
  • You have completed The Bloodstone Chalice.
  • You have unlocked both the Night Cloak and Summon Gargoyle perks in the Vampire Lord perk tree. Without these two perks, Feran simply will not offer the job.

Once the conditions are met, speak to Feran Sadri inside Castle Volkihar.

Walkthrough

Find the Amulet of Bats and the Amulet of the Gargoyle

Each amulet is placed in a randomly chosen (radiant) location, which your journal marks for you. When you arrive, the amulet is either carried by a leveled boss or tucked away in a chest, so clear the place out and check both the boss’s body and the boss chest. The pool of possible locations is large and includes, among others, Ancient’s Ascent, Benkongerike, Bloodlet Throne, Chillwind Depths, Clearpine Pond, Embershard Mine, Forsaken Cave, Fort Fellhammer, Gallows Rock, High Gate Ruins, Labyrinthian (Lost Valkygg), Morvunskar, Movarth’s Lair, Rannveig’s Fast, Shimmermist Cave, Skyborn Altar, The Katariah, Volskygge and Yngvild.

Two picks deserve a special mention. If one amulet lands in Rebel’s Cairn, you may have to work through The Legend of Red Eagle to get at it. With the Dragonborn add-on installed, an amulet can also be sent to Solstheim, for example to Hrodulf’s House.

Return to Feran Sadri

With both amulets in your pack, travel back to Castle Volkihar and hand them over to Feran to finish the quest.

Rewards

  • Amulet of Bats
  • Amulet of the Gargoyle
  • According to the source walkthrough, Feran also rewards you with either a leveled item or three Potions of Blood.

Both amulets strengthen your Vampire Lord powers while you are transformed. Fittingly, the quest is gated behind the Night Cloak and Summon Gargoyle perks.

Tips and notes

  • Because the amulets can be held by a leveled boss, check every named or boss-level enemy before you leave the location.
  • The game data contains three item slots, but the journal and all source descriptions only ever speak of two amulets.
  • You may stumble on the rings from Rings of Blood Magic in the same places, so it can pay to have both quests running.
  • Locations whose bosses can be killed for good, such as Dragon Priests or the Gauldursons of Saarthal, Geirmund’s Hall and Folgunthur, can cause trouble if you already cleared them. A save before accepting is a good idea.

Walkthrough

Choices & consequences

Known bugs & fixes

If the amulet bearer is a Dragon Priest or Gauldurson you already killed, the body may be gone and the amulet unobtainable. At Clearpine Pond the Amulet of Bats can be out of reach inside the giant tree (PC). On Xbox 360 the Chillwind Depths marker may point at nothing. Turning in the amulets may complete the quest without unlocking Feran’s follow-up dialogue.

Lore notes

The amulets were originally gifts from Molag Bal to ancient Vampire Lords.
