Ancient’s Ascent is a dragon lair perched among the high peaks east of Falkreath, close to Skyrim’s southern border. The usual way up is through the icy cave of Bonechill Passage, which spits you out onto snowy steps leading to the summit. Waiting at the top: a dragon, a chest and a Word Wall for the Animal Allegiance shout.
What you’ll find
- Snow-covered stone steps climbing towards the dragon’s roost, where ice wraiths may come swirling out of the drifts.
- A dragon nesting at the peak – but only once Dragon Rising is done. Before that, leveled creatures hold the summit instead.
- An ancient Word Wall teaching a word of Animal Allegiance.
- A loot chest right in front of the Word Wall.
Quests
- Kill the Dragon – when Esbern sends you after this dragon, the quest marker points to Bonechill Passage, the intended entrance.
- Dragon Hunting – the lair can be a target for this radiant job.
- Ice Cold – a possible place to collect the ice wraith teeth you need.
Notable items
- Word Wall: Animal Allegiance.
- The chest in front of the wall.
Tips
Bonechill Passage is the designed route, but not the only one. With patient jumping and climbing you can scale the mountain face above the cave entrance and reach the steps near the passage’s upper exit. Another approach starts at the door of Bloodlet Throne: head straight for the map marker, work along the rock wall to its left edge and hop over with a couple of jumps. That route drops you on the peak right behind the dragon – perfect for a sneak attack before it even wakes up.
A quieter path also runs up from Angi’s Camp: take the right-hand branch at the fork and follow the trail to the lair. A horse makes any of these climbs much less painful, and is famously unbothered by gravity.
