Folgunthur is an ancient Nordic tomb southeast of Solitude and directly west of Windstad Manor. It is the burial place of Mikrul Gauldurson, who is tied to the legend of the Gauldur amulet, and one of the stops in the hunt for its fragments. A camp near the entrance shows that a scholar named Daynas Valen got here first – things did not go well for him.
What you’ll find
- Leveled draugr and frostbite spiders throughout.
- Daynas Valen’s body, carrying his journal and the Ivory Dragon Claw needed to go deeper.
- Puzzle rooms with rotating stone pillars, and a chamber with two thrones, two doors and two levers – opening one door closes the other.
- A hallway with a fire trap and gates at both ends.
- Mikrul Gauldurson himself, backed by draugr thralls.
- A Frost Breath Word Wall behind metal bars to the right once Mikrul is defeated.
- Smuggler’s Alcove, a sublocation of the tomb.
Quests
Forbidden Legend – one of the Gauldur amulet fragments is here. If the quest did not start during Under Saarthal, you can start it here instead.
Notable items
- Gauldur amulet fragment
- Gauldur Blackblade, Mikrul’s unique sword
- Ivory Dragon Claw
- Fire and Darkness – One-Handed skill book
- Purloined Shadows – skill book in a small camp with two hay piles and a cooking spit just northwest of the tomb
- Daynas Valen’s Notes and Journal, a Writ of Sealing, and possibly Meridia’s Beacon
- Ingredients: bone meal and frostbite venom
Tips
Start Forbidden Legend before you clear the tomb. Clearing Folgunthur first can leave the amulet fragment unobtainable and the quest stuck, which is a sad fate for a legendary amulet.
If a pillar puzzle refuses to budge or a gate stays shut, saving and reloading often sorts it out. Leave a save outside before you enter, just in case.
