Hrodulf’s House

Ruined ashland shack southeast of Raven Rock hiding a basement, a secret passage and a tiny Dwemer ruin where a sad love story ends.

Hrodulf’s House is a ruined shack in the southern ash wastes of Solstheim, added with the Dragonborn expansion. It lies southeast of Raven Rock and Kolbjorn Barrow, and southwest of Fort Frostmoth. At first glance it looks like there is nothing left worth stealing, but a trapdoor and a journal turn it into one of the island’s better little mysteries.

What you’ll find

  • Upstairs: a half-collapsed ruin with a few scattered items, a wooden chest and a note from Bjornolfr to Hrodulf on the table.
  • A trapdoor just right of the chest leading to the basement, where Hrodulf’s Journal waits alongside two leveled Reavers.
  • A bookshelf next to the journal that opens a secret passage, just as the journal describes.
  • At the end of the passage, a small hidden Dwemer ruin with an oddly humming Dwarven mechanism. Bjornolfr lies dead here with a Bloodstained Letter, some gold coins and a Nordic dagger.
  • Hrodulf’s own body further south, beside a small rowboat and a Burnt Spriggan.
  • Ash Spawn roaming the area outside.

Quests

The house is a possible location for Ancient Technology (with the Enhanced Crossbow Schematic), Ancient Power, Protecting the Bloodline, Lost Relic, Hunting the Monster (a leveled Vampire target) and Preemptive Strike – all Dawnguard – plus Family Heirloom and Amulet of the Moon, where Kharjo‘s Moon Amulet may turn up.

Notable items

  • Hrodulf’s Journal – on a box beside the basement bookshelf.
  • East Empire Company Strongbox – on a shelf directly opposite the hatch down, containing an East Empire Pendant.
  • A unique weightless torch on the basement floor that casts dynamic shadows.
  • A gold diamond ring and an Amulet of Mara in the rowboat next to Hrodulf.
  • An apprentice-level lockbox on the roof.

Tips

Sneak down the trapdoor: if the Reavers don’t spot you, you will overhear them wondering whether “he” is the one they left in the tunnel, and mocking the note upstairs – a grim hint at who killed Bjornolfr. Read the journal before poking at the bookshelf so the story lands properly. Climb up to check the roof for the lockbox, and look southeast of the house for two Heart Stone deposits.

Good to know

The basement also holds an empty bottle of Spiced Wine, which somehow makes the whole tragedy feel even lonelier.
