Winterhold Stormcloak Camp

Stormcloak war camp far east of Winterhold and much nearer Windhelm, with a quartermaster, crafting stations and a war map, active during the Civil War.

Winterhold Stormcloak Camp is a Stormcloak encampment set up during the Civil War questline. It carries Winterhold’s name but actually lies much closer to Windhelm than to Winterhold. Since the rebels control the surrounding territory when the game begins, the camp can stay put for as long as they keep it.

What you’ll find

  • A Stormcloak Quartermaster who buys and sells gear.
  • Stormcloak soldiers guarding the tents.
  • Crafting stations: alchemy lab, anvil, grindstone and workbench.
  • A large map in one of the tents that may add new locations to your map when you inspect it.
  • A handful of chests.

Quests

The camp plays a part in the Civil War questline. Whether you are welcomed or treated as a target depends on which side you have joined.

Tips

If you fight for Ulfric, use the camp as a handy pit stop on the long road between Windhelm and the north coast: offload loot, repair and upgrade gear and brew potions in one place. Legion loyalists should expect a warmer welcome of the pointy kind. Don’t skip the map in the tent – reading it is free and might save you some exploring.

Because the camp’s survival is tied to who controls the surrounding territory, its fate is a small barometer of how the war is going. As long as the rebels keep control, the tents, traders and crafting stations stay; if the Legion takes it over, the soldiers pack up and leave. If you rely on the quartermaster for selling loot, keep that in mind before you help the Legion take over.

The chests are fair game in the sense that you can open them, but taking from a camp of armed soldiers who are currently on your side is a bold way to test their patience.

Good to know

If the Stormcloaks are not using this spot, there is no camp at all – just an unmarked Shrine of Arkay standing alone in the snow. Handy if you need a blessing; less handy if you came to shop.
