Restoration Scrolls

All twelve Restoration scrolls in Skyrim: healing scrolls and anti-undead wards, with effects, values, form IDs and where to find each one.

Restoration scrolls each hold the effect of a single Restoration spell, ready to be read in the middle of a fight. The school’s scrolls fall into two clear groups. One half patches up wounds: you can heal yourself, a follower, or everyone standing near you. The other half is aimed squarely at the dead that walk, sending draugr and skeletons running, setting them alight or warding off an area with a protective circle. That makes them a handy backup for any character heading into a Nordic tomb, whether or not they ever trained in Restoration.

Where to find them

The most dependable shop is the College of Winterhold. Colette Marence, the College’s Restoration teacher, is listed as a seller of Fast Healing, Heal Other, Repel Lesser Undead and Repel Undead scrolls. Turn Greater Undead has the widest merchant list of the group: the court wizards and other spell vendors in the holds carry it, among them Sybille Stentor in Solitude, Wylandriah in Riften, Falion in Morthal, Calcelmo in Markarth, Dravynea in Kynesgrove, Madena in Dawnstar, Farengar Secret-Fire in Whiterun and Wuunferth the Unliving in Windhelm, plus Nelecar in Winterhold. At the College, Drevis Neloren, Enthir, Faralda, Phinis Gestor and Tolfdir stock it too. Grand Healing is also noted as a court wizard item.

Several scrolls also sit in fixed spots or turn up as random loot:

  • Bane of the Undead – the boss chest in Potema’s Sanctum, for sale at the College, and as loot.
  • Circle of Protection – on a cupboard close to the exit of Fort Snowhawk, and on a pedestal in Dead Men’s Respite.
  • Cure Wounds – the Animonculary in Alftand, and Sunderstone Gorge (which also holds a Fast Healing scroll).
  • Grand Healing – random loot in Nordic ruins and in Apocrypha (Dragonborn).
  • Guardian Circle – Bleak Falls Barrow and Apocrypha (Dragonborn).
  • Turn Lesser Undead – Black Arts Burial Ground, and Tel Mithryn (Dragonborn).
  • Turn Undead – Ruunvald Excavation (Dawnguard).

Highlights

Bane of the Undead is the priciest scroll of the school at 500 septims, and the strongest undead answer here: it burns undead up to level 30 and drives them off for 30 seconds. It mirrors the Restoration spell of the same name.

Guardian Circle covers both halves of the school at once. Undead up to level 35 that step into the circle flee, while you regain 20 health per second as long as you stay inside. An early copy waits in Bleak Falls Barrow, one of the first dungeons most players clear.

Cure Wounds is the only scroll in this group without a matching spell. It restores 100 health to the reader in one go, more than double what Fast Healing gives.

Grand Healing restores 100 points to everyone near you. Note that the Fandom article says the scroll version does not heal the caster, unlike the spell, so treat it as a party heal for followers.

Heal Other mends a target for 45 points, useful for keeping a follower on their feet. It has no effect on undead, atronachs or machines.

The Turn and Repel scrolls form a ladder by undead level: Turn Lesser Undead and Repel Lesser Undead reach level 4, Turn Undead and Repel Undead level 8, and Turn Greater Undead level 12. All of them make the affected undead flee for 30 seconds, and Circle of Protection gives the same level-8 effect as a ward on the ground.

Tips

  • Check an undead foe’s level against the scroll’s cap before reading it; a scroll aimed too low simply won’t make strong draugr flee.
  • Keep a Cure Wounds or Guardian Circle scroll for emergencies in crypts, where you get both healing and crowd control.
  • Looking for other schools? See Destruction scrolls, Conjuration scrolls, Alteration scrolls and Illusion scrolls.
