Narfi is a Nord beggar living in the ruins of his family’s old home on the far side of the river in Ivarstead. Dressed in dirty rags, he has lost his grip on reality since his sister Reyda vanished about a year ago. The innkeeper told him she’d come back, and Narfi has been waiting ever since.
Where to find them
In and around the ruined farmhouse across the river. Leave your armour lying around his place and he’ll come and politely ask you to take it away.
Quests
The Straw that Broke: Narfi begs you to look for Reyda and points you to Wilhelm. Wilhelm admits he only said she’d return to comfort him; Reyda used to gather ingredients on a small island in the river, near a cave called Geirmund’s Hall. Her remains lie in the river, along with her necklace. Bring it to Narfi and you choose: tell him the truth, or tell him she’s coming home. Either way he keeps the necklace and you get a leveled reward.
Contract: Kill Narfi: he is also a target for the Dark Brotherhood. Killing him after starting The Straw that Broke fails that quest, and since his reward is leveled, finishing his quest first at higher level is the better deal.
Personality & relationships
Narfi talks about himself in the third person, rhymes and repeats words in a sad, childlike way, and shouts warnings that the mountain will eat you. What hurts him most is not that Reyda is gone, but that he never got to say goodbye, as he did with his mother and father. Lie to him and he finally feels he can sleep; tell the truth and he can’t. He is also the one Ivarstead resident with nothing to say about High Hrothgar.
Good to know
He carries an iron dagger but won’t fight back if attacked. If he dies, his coffin turns up in the Hall of the Dead in Riften. His name comes from Norse myth, where Narfi is a son of Loki.
