Captain Lonely-Gale is a Nord living in Windhelm who once made his living at sea. He worked his way up as a trader until he could buy his own ship, and when he retired to the city everybody already called him Captain, so the name stuck. Behind the friendly manners is a man who lost his family and admits he is not sure what keeps him going.
Where to find them
He has no house of his own and spends his nights at Candlehearth Hall. By day he wanders the city, and he is happy to point newcomers in the right direction: the market, the inn, or a few coins’ worth of oddities at Calixto Corrium‘s shop. Ask him about the city’s notable people and he’ll name the author Adonato Leotelli, the Shatter-Shield and Cruel-Sea clans, Ulfric Stormcloak himself, and, with a sigh, Viola Giordano.
Personality & relationships
Lonely-Gale is level-headed and a little weary. When Elda Early-Dawn repeats rumours about dragons freeing Ulfric, he tells her not to believe every traveller’s tale. When Niranye fishes for sailors to help with a business proposition, he shuts it down the moment it smells of smuggling. His biggest headache is Viola Giordano, who keeps trying to cheer him up with proverbs, invitations and her own theories about the murders. He reminds her he lost his wife, not a passing lover, and keeps postponing her offers. He may even greet you by asking whether Viola sent you.
Not everyone is impressed by him. Out at Hlaalu Farm, Belyn Hlaalu seems oddly fascinated by the captain, while his maid Adisla dismisses him as a guard captain, and not a good one.
Good to know
- The official strategy guide says he should replace Jorleif as steward if Windhelm falls to the Imperial Legion. In practice this doesn’t happen, although he has unused steward dialogue tied to the Battle for Windhelm that only shows up if Jorleif is dead.
- His farewell is an old sailors’ saying wishing you fair winds and calm seas.
