Helgird is an elderly Nord priestess of Arkay who looks after the Hall of the Dead in Windhelm. She has spent so long among corpses that her sense of humour has gone thoroughly morbid, and she seems perfectly content with it: in her view the dead don’t complain much.
Where to find them
In and around the Hall of the Dead and its graveyard, where she prays to Arkay over the departed. She also shows up at the scene of the first murder you witness in the city.
Quests
Blood on the Ice – Helgird is at the scene when Susanna the Wicked is found dead, and points out that Susanna’s coin purse is untouched, so robbery wasn’t the motive. She then takes the body to prepare it for burial. Once you have permission to investigate, she shares the key detail: the wounds match the curved blades ancient Nords used for embalming. Ask whether she did it herself and she reasonably notes she would hardly mention the cuts if she had. That clue eventually leads the investigation to Calixto Corrium.
Personality & relationships
Dry, matter-of-fact and slightly too comfortable with death. She cracks a joke about the body, apologises, and gets back to work. She also points out that Windhelm’s cold slows decay, though burials sometimes have to wait for the ground to thaw.
Good to know
- In the game files her race is listed as “Elder”, the elderly Nord variant.
- During or after Blood on the Ice she can get stuck repeating her line about the diagonal cut instead of her normal dialogue.
