Redbelly Mine

Iron mine at Shor’s Stone north of Riften, infested by frostbite spiders during Mine or Yours and hiding three ebony ore veins at the bottom.

Redbelly Mine is the mine of Shor’s Stone, a small settlement north-northwest of Riften. It is officially an iron mine, but locals talk about a strange red mist at the bottom of the dig, and the miners claim to have found quicksilver and ebony as well. You will most likely come here because the place has been overrun by spiders and the village wants its income back.

What you’ll find

  • The entrance sits just west-northwest of Filnjar’s House.
  • A wooden bridge crosses a big circular pit full of frostbite spiders; two spurs off the bridge are dead ends.
  • From the far end, a ramp spirals down the pit walls to the floor, with more spiders on the way.
  • Iron ore veins on the pit floor.
  • Residents named in connection with the mine: Filnjar, Odfel, Grogmar gro-Burzag and Sylgja.

Quests

Mine or Yours: Filnjar asks you to clear the frostbite spiders out. Nobody has been hurt yet, but the miners can’t work and the settlement’s money has dried up.

Notable items

Three ebony ore veins: one on the floor just before the last ramp, one right at the foot of the final ramp, and one on the opposite side of the pit floor.

Tips

Bring fire and something for poison – frostbite spiders love ambushes on narrow ramps. The spiders respawn after a few in-game days, so the mine can’t be cleared for good. With Whirlwind Sprint you can reach an opening in the wall above the ramp, but the only reward is a corpse hanging from the ceiling. Sightseeing!

Good to know

The ore Filnjar hands over looks like quicksilver ore, yet there’s no quicksilver to mine inside. The red mist may be linked to Redwater Spring nearby to the west, which has the same mist.
