Septimus Signus’ Outpost is an ice-bound cave in the far north of Winterhold, perched above the Sea of Ghosts north of the College of Winterhold. It is the home and research den of Septimus Signus, a reclusive scholar with deep ties to Daedric and Dwarven mysteries. Visit when you’re ready for a strange errand, a Daedric whisper and one of the most coveted books in the game.
What you’ll find
- Septimus Signus himself, the outpost’s sole resident.
- A presence of Hermaeus Mora – not in the flesh, but he makes himself known.
- A lexicon puzzle room that opens later in the questline.
- Three Fire Salts and a Common Soul Gem lying around (owned by Septimus).
How to get there
Head out from the College of Winterhold and follow the icy trail north towards the coast. The outpost is a lonely hole in a glacier, so look for the small entrance rather than a building. Bring frost resistance, or at least a warm cloak and some patience.
Quests
- Elder Knowledge – the main quest sends you here when you need to read an Elder Scroll.
- Discerning the Transmundane – Septimus’s own Daedric quest, ending with a forbidden tome.
- Boethiah’s Calling – the outpost also plays a part in this Daedric quest.
Notable items
- Oghma Infinium – only after Discerning the Transmundane is completed.
- Boethiah’s Proving.
- Chimarvamidium.
Tips
Keep your hands to yourself while Septimus is alive: taking anything here turns him hostile. After the quest, his belongings and the book in the puzzle room are free to take, but everything else still counts as his. The icy walkway up from the College is narrow – riding a horse along it is a reliable way to go swimming in the Sea of Ghosts. Save before your first conversation with Hermaeus Mora, as the dialogue reportedly sometimes fails to appear and leaves you stuck.
