Protecting the Bloodline

A repeatable Volkihar quest: Fura Bloodmouth or Garan Marethi send you to kill a Master Vampire before it builds a rival coven.

Protecting the Bloodline is a radiant quest for vampire-side players in the Dawnguard add-on. Fura Bloodmouth or Garan Marethi of the Volkihar Clan have learned of a Master Vampire who is turning its companions into a new coven, and the Court does not appreciate competition. Your job is to put an end to the upstart before its little family becomes a problem.

Kill the vampire

The journal names a leveled boss vampire and a randomly chosen dungeon. Possible locations include Ansilvund, Bilegulch Mine, Boulderfall Cave, Brittleshin Pass, Broken Fang Cave, Broken Oar Grotto, Embershard Mine, Falkreath Watchtower, Halted Stream Camp, Hob’s Fall Cave, Knifepoint Ridge, Lost Knife Hideout, Mara’s Eye Pond, Morvunskar, Rannveig’s Fast, Treva’s Watch, Uttering Hills Camp, Valtheim Towers, Wreck of the Winter War, Redoran’s Retreat and Sunderstone Gorge.

If the Dragonborn add-on is installed, the target can also be on Solstheim, at Bloodskal Barrow, Damphall Mine or Hrodulf’s House.

Fight your way to the vampire and kill it.

Tips and notes

  • The vampire is leveled, so it scales with you. Read the journal entry for its exact title and the dungeon it is hiding in before you set off.
  • Being radiant, the quest can be repeated as many times as you like, each time with a new target and location.
  • It runs alongside other Volkihar radiant quests from the same givers, such as The Hunt.
  • Some locations, such as Hrodulf’s House, also appear in the Volkihar quest Amulets of Night Power.
