Boulderfall Cave is a compact cave southwest of Shor’s Stone and northwest of Fort Greenwall. Oddly, its entrance is a mine door, which suggests someone once tried – and failed – to dig something useful out of it. These days it belongs to necromancers who have turned the place into a well-stocked lab and pantry.
What you’ll find
- A tattered red flag on a rock outside with a coin purse of about 23 Septims next to it.
- A necromancer guarding the entrance; another may leap down from the cliff above the path to ambush you.
- A steep descent with two cobweb-covered barrels of random alchemy supplies, and bone chimes hanging in the opening to the main chamber.
- The lead necromancer, usually busy at the alchemy lab on the western wooden platform.
- An eastern storage corner full of food, wine bottles, slaughterfish and a corundum ore vein by the stairs.
Quests
The cave is a common target for radiant quests: it can hold the staff for Onmund‘s Request, the Staff of Tandil for Arniel’s Endeavor, a totem for Totems of Hircine, or Shalidor’s Insights. It may also be the target of Farkas’s Trouble in Skyrim, and of Preemptive Strike, where Gunmar sends you after a vampire (Dawnguard).
Notable items
- Herbalist’s Guide to Skyrim (Alchemy) – on the shelf between the bread and the Nord Mead.
- A random Frenzy poison on the bottom shelf of the same bookcase.
- Corundum ore vein.
Tips
Look up as you approach – the necromancer on the cliff likes a dramatic entrance. Inside, the main chamber is visible from the opening, so you can pick off the leader at the lab before he finishes his latest brew. Once it’s quiet, help yourself to the alchemy lab and the generous food stores.
Good to know
Southeast of the cave, a ruined shrine holds a leveled mage and a copy of Racial Phylogeny. Southwest, a ruined house with two bandits has The Battle of Red Mountain (Block); with Dawnguard it becomes Redwater Den.
