Naaslaarum

One of two revered dragons that erupt from the frozen lake of the Forgotten Vale during Touching the Sky in Dawnguard.

Naaslaarum is a Revered Dragon from the Dawnguard add-on, and half of a matched pair. His name breaks down into Naas-Laar-Um, Tooth-Water-Twin in the dragon tongue, a fitting title for a dragon that lives under a lake and never appears without his twin, Voslaarum. Players usually meet him by surprise: the ice cracks, two dragons explode out of the water, and a peaceful walk through a snowy valley turns into a two-front war.

Where to find him

Naaslaarum and Voslaarum lurk under the big frozen lake in the Forgotten Vale, which the Dragonborn explores during the Dawnguard quest Touching the Sky. Step out onto the ice and both dragons break through it and attack. They only appear once the main quest Dragon Rising is complete, so the lake stays quiet if you reach it before that point.

Unlike most dragons, he is comfortable in water: he can plunge beneath the surface and come back up whenever he likes, which can make him maddening to pin down.

Notes

Near the treasure chest by the nearby word wall for Drain Vitality you will find a few Resist Fire potions, which are worth grabbing before taking on the twins. The word wall itself teaches part of Drain Vitality, the same shout every revered dragon, Naaslaarum included, uses in combat. His level is radiant, ranging from 10 to 62, so his health scales from 905 up to 3511 depending on how strong you are when you reach the Vale. His magicka stays at 150, while stamina climbs from 130 to 304. Since the pair fight as a team, it is worth reading up on Voslaarum as well before heading out onto the ice.

Abilities & attacks

  • Drain Vitality shout
  • Dives underwater and resurfaces at will
  • Bursts out from beneath the frozen lake to ambush intruders

How to beat it

You face Naaslaarum and Voslaarum together, so try to keep both in sight and drop back to the shore rather than fighting in the middle of the ice. Drink one of the Resist Fire potions from the nearby word wall chest before the fight. When he dives underwater, wait for him to resurface instead of wasting arrows or magicka, and focus one dragon at a time.
