Melaran is a High Elf mage working as the housecarl and bodyguard of Erikur, a wealthy citizen of Solitude. He considers the job beneath him, but admits the pay is good enough to put up with it.
Where to find them
He’s either in Erikur’s House or in the Blue Palace.
Personality & relationships
Melaran is blunt, sarcastic and has zero patience for fools – he’ll tell you as much the moment you open your mouth. When asked what he actually does, he says his job is keeping Erikur alive, in a tone that suggests he doesn’t love the man. Erikur, for his part, calls him a lazy milk-drinker, and has him review shipments of weapons from Black Marsh to resell to whichever side pays best. Melaran’s reply to that is a masterpiece of dry sarcasm.
He respects the court wizard Sybille Stentor – grudgingly impressed that a human, let alone a Breton, understands magical theory so well – but he’s clearly wary of her. Ask him about her and he’ll hint darkly that the headsman’s axe isn’t the worst fate for a prisoner in the Solitude dungeon, then catch himself for talking too much. If you’re after magic training, he points you to the College of Winterhold.
Good to know
If Sybille Stentor dies, Melaran becomes court wizard to Elisif the Fair and moves into her quarters. He’ll even remark that he heard you had something to do with it. Unlike Sybille, he does not sell spell tomes, so removing her costs you a magic merchant.
Should Melaran die, Irnskar Ironhand sends you a letter thanking you. He’s also one of the rare Altmer men in the game with facial hair.
