Gaius Maro is an Imperial member of the Penitus Oculatus, the Emperor’s personal guard, and the son of its leader, Commander Maro. He is a dutiful young officer who thinks his father worries far too much. Unfortunately for Gaius, his father turns out to be right.
Where to find them
He starts at the Penitus Oculatus Outpost in Dragon Bridge, then follows a set route to each of the major cities, the ones where the Jarl has a separate palace, to check their defences. In Windhelm he even sleeps in the barracks, despite the city being a rebel stronghold.
Quests
Gaius is the target of Breaching Security. If you have joined the Dark Brotherhood, Gabriella asks you to kill him inside one of the major cities and plant an incriminating letter on his body. The letter paints him as a spy for Ulfric Stormcloak who covered up a Stormcloak plot against the Emperor. The goal is to shatter his father’s focus and leave the Emperor exposed.
The quest opens with a farewell scene at Dragon Bridge: Gaius says goodbye to his father, who drills him on staying alert, and to Faida, who asks him to come home safe.
Personality & relationships
Gaius is confident, a little dismissive of danger and fiercely loyal. He brushes off his father’s warnings, insisting he is only inspecting guard posts, not charging into battle. With strangers he is curt and quick to threaten, and if you tell him you plan to kill the Emperor, he draws steel immediately. He and Faida share an affectionate goodbye that strongly suggests a romance.
Good to know
Killing him can give you a bounty with “Commander Maro’s Crime Faction”. If a dragon attacks the city he is in, he can get stuck sneaking.
