Solitude Sawmill

Lumber mill southwest of Solitude run by Hjorunn with Kharag gro-Shurkul, where you can sell firewood at full price and buy sawn logs with Hearthfire.

Solitude Sawmill is a working lumber mill southwest of Solitude, owned by Hjorunn and staffed by the Orc Kharag gro-Shurkul. It is not a place for adventure so much as for honest work: chop some wood, sell it, and maybe pick up building supplies for your house. The Solitude Military Camp sits on the slope above it, which becomes relevant late in the civil war.

What you’ll find

  • Hjorunn, the owner, who buys any firewood you chop at full price.
  • Kharag gro-Shurkul, who sells Sawn Logs if you have Hearthfire – 20 logs for 200 gold (Hearthfire).
  • A wood chopping block right next to the mill.
  • Grindstones for sharpening weapons.
  • A few chests with random loot and some potions.

Tips

Chopping wood here and selling it straight back to Hjorunn is one of the most peaceful ways to earn early gold in the game: no bandits, no draugr, just you and an axe. If you are building a home in Hearthfire, Kharag is a convenient source of Sawn Logs, though he will not let you cut your own here. Use the grindstone to improve your weapons while you are at it.

Good to know

At some point after the civil war broke out, Stormcloak agents tried to burn the mill down but were caught in time. Hjorunn also likes to claim the guards never come snooping around, even though you can watch them patrol the road right past his door.
