Firewood

Firewood is the humble split log you chop yourself, used to fletch arrows and bolts and to temper basic wooden gear.

Firewood is about as basic as Skyrim crafting gets: split logs from a woodcutter’s block. It still earns its place, though, because every arrow you forge needs a piece – from Iron Arrows all the way up to Daedric, Dragonbone and Stalhrim ones – along with Steel and Dwarven bolts. It is also used for the Dawnguard Crossbow and to temper the Long Bow and Wooden Sword. Worth 5 gold and weighing 5, it is mainly a way to earn coins early on.

How to get it

The classic method is chopping it yourself. Activate any wood chopping block with a woodcutter’s axe in your inventory and your character starts splitting logs. Early in the game, Hod in Riverwood will buy it as part of the Chop Wood activity, and you can also sell it at mills such as Half-Moon Mill or the Solitude Sawmill.

It is also lying around in large piles. Highpoint Tower has a whopping 22 pieces, while the Volkihar Ruins at Castle Volkihar and Fort Frostmoth each have 9. The Skaal Village Greathall on Solstheim holds 8, and the cellars of Heljarchen Hall, Windstad Manor and Lakeview Manor have 7 each. Frossel and Bristleback Cave add 7 more each, and The Warrens has 6.
