Blizzard Rest

Lonely giant camp on the tundra between Whiterun and Dawnstar, where one giant herds two mammoths beside Heljarchen Hall and guards an expert-locked chest.

Blizzard Rest is a small giant camp out on the open, snowy tundra north of Whiterun and south of Dawnstar. Only one giant lives here, looking after two mammoths. That sounds modest until you remember that one giant is quite enough to launch an unprepared adventurer into low orbit. If you own the Hearthfire homestead Heljarchen Hall, these are your closest – and largest – neighbours.

What you’ll find

  • One giant and two mammoths.
  • A bonfire with two charred skeevers roasting over it.
  • Leather pouches holding three mammoth cheese bowls.
  • An expert-locked chest with random loot.

Quests

Kill the Giant – once you reach level 22, the Jarl of Dawnstar may hand you a bounty to deal with the giant here. Finishing this job is also one of the steps toward being allowed to buy the land for Heljarchen Hall (Hearthfire).

Notable items

  • Expert-locked chest with random loot.
  • Mammoth cheese bowls and charred skeever hide – handy alchemy and cooking extras.

Tips

The camp sits in flat, open country, so there is very little cover – bring a bow or spells and keep your distance rather than charging in with a dagger. Taking the mammoths on at the same time as the giant makes the fight a lot messier, so try to pull the giant away first. If you only want the chest, an expert lock and some careful sneaking might be the less painful option. Homestead owners take note: according to the Heljarchen Hall notes, a giant from Blizzard Rest may wander over and trample your livestock, so clearing the camp can double as pest control.
