White River Watch is a bandit hideout east of Whiterun, along the road past Honningbrew Meadery. Hajvarr Iron-Hand and his gang use it as a base for robbing travellers and merchant caravans heading to and from the city. City guards and carriage drivers will both grumble about old Hajvarr, which is about as clear an invitation as Skyrim ever gives.
What you’ll find
- A handful of bandits at the entrance, plus a lone bandit outside who turns out to be called Rodulf – you only learn his name from a note on his body.
- Ulfr the Blind, Hajvarr’s uncle, keeping watch just inside. He won’t attack unless you provoke him.
- Two bandits grumbling about Ulfr and plotting to get rid of both him and Hajvarr. They never actually get around to it.
- A caged wolf the gang is failing to tame, with an iron ore vein just above the cage.
- An alchemy lab, and six kinds of fungi growing through the cave, including plenty of Imp Stool and White Cap.
- White River Overlook at the top – a peak on the flanks of the Throat of the World, where Hajvarr sits watching the road and Whiterun beyond.
Quests
The cave can be selected for several radiant quests, including Amren’s Sword, Amulet of the Moon and The Break of Dawn.

- Ulfr’s Book – which you can open, though every page is blank. Ulfr is blind, after all.
Tips
Open the wolf’s cage and it will turn on the nearest bandits, which makes for a handy distraction. Just be ready to put it down afterwards, because once the bandits are dead, it comes for you next. Gratitude is not a wolf trait.
Fight Hajvarr with care on the overlook. If his body tumbles off the cliff you can climb down to loot it, but quest markers may get confused afterwards and a restart of the game fixes that.
