Darkwater Crossing

Small corundum-mining settlement on the Darkwater River, home of Annekke Crag-Jumper and Goldenrock Mine, near where Ulfric was captured.

Darkwater Crossing is a tiny mining settlement on the road beside the Darkwater River, on the edge of the steaming sulfur pools. Fort Amol is the nearest neighbour to the west and Mistwatch to the east. Explorer Annekke Crag-Jumper found corundum on the hillside, built a cabin, and other people soon followed. Today it’s a handful of miners, a mine and a campfire – and a nice safe stop in a wild part of the map.

What you’ll find

  • Goldenrock Mine, with four corundum ore veins.
  • Verner and Annekke’s House near the mine entrance.
  • Blacksmith equipment, a wood chopping block by the house and bedrolls around a campfire near the mine.
  • Residents: Annekke Crag-Jumper, Derkeethus, Hrefna, Tormir, Sondas Drenim and Verner Rock-Chucker.
  • A guard presence from either the Stormcloaks or the Imperial Legion, depending on the war.
  • A random-encounter spot just behind the mine to the southeast. Hostiles that spawn there sometimes wander into town.

Quests

Several small jobs start here: Extracting an Argonian, Special Delivery, Deliver Sondas’s Note to Quintus and a Kill the Bandit Leader bounty. The miners have also come down with a nasty cough and are hoping an alchemist in Windhelm can help.

Notable items

  • Chimarvamidium – Heavy Armor skill book on a barrel next to some bedding.
  • Corundum ore in Goldenrock Mine.

Tips

Four corundum veins in one mine is a good haul, so a quick trip into Goldenrock Mine is worth it if you’re levelling Smithing. The forge here lets you smelt and work on the spot. Keep an eye on the area behind the mine: if something nasty spawns there, the villagers will need your help, and they’re not exactly a militia.

Good to know

This is where Ulfric Stormcloak, Ralof and their men were caught in the Imperial ambush that sent them to Helgen in the opening of the game. Oddly, nobody in town ever mentions it. Residents also talk about two men, Dasturn and Meieran, who never actually appear.
