Lost Echo Cave is a tomb-turned-cave far to the west of Solitude, reached by stairs climbing up from the main road. Behind its wooden door it looks like an old Nordic burial site with just two quiet rooms. Quiet, that is, until you solve its little riddle and wake up the neighbours. Oddly, the game files count the cave as part of Falkreath Hold, although it lies in the far west of Skyrim, nowhere near the rest of that hold.
What you’ll find
- Two seemingly empty rooms and a ceremonial brazier. Burn a glowing mushroom in it and a secret door opens.
- Falmer and their chaurus behind that door, plus three chests.
- A quicksilver ore vein in the first room with the Falmer.
- An alchemist’s buffet: dozens of glowing mushroom clusters, piles of chaurus eggs and a single fly amanita.
Quests
- Fetch Me That Book! – Urag gro-Shub of the College of Winterhold may send you here after a stolen library book.
- Rescue Mission – a radiant job from the Companions can place a captive here, held by bandits.
- Rings of Blood Magic (Dawnguard) – possible spot for one of the rings.
- Trouble in Skyrim – possible target for a dungeon-leader kill.
Notable items
- 2920, vol 01 – Morning Star (One-handed skill book) in the second room.
- The Old Tome – it holds the hint you need for the brazier.
- Three chests in the hidden section.
Tips
If the place seems empty and you’re wondering why the map bothered to mark it, read the Old Tome. It talks about honouring a fallen lord humbly with the glowing fungus on the walls – take the hint, pick a mushroom and put it in the brazier. Chaurus spit poison, so pack a cure or two, and creeping in quietly lets you pick your fights. On the way out, harvest the mushrooms and eggs – they sell and brew nicely.
Good to know
The tomb was apparently built for a mighty lord who wanted to be remembered humbly, so his followers chose the humble mushroom as his tribute. It’s a rare Skyrim puzzle that rewards reading instead of pulling every lever in sight.
