Falmer War Axe

A chitin war axe of the Falmer with 11 base damage, looted from Falmer in Skyrim’s deep caves and Dwemer ruins.

The Falmer War Axe is made from chaurus chitin, the insect-like material behind most Falmer craftsmanship. It has an organic, limb-like shape with a leather-wrapped grip, and it looks every bit as unpleasant as the creatures who wield it.

On paper it is a decent mid-game axe: 11 base damage beats steel, though at 21 weight it is unusually heavy for a one-hander. Most players use it briefly after a long Falmer cave crawl, or keep one to complete a matching Falmer Armor set.

  • Wielded by Falmer of every type, so any Falmer-infested cave or Dwemer ruin is a good place to pick one up.
  • It cannot be forged, so looting is the only way to get one.

Crafting and upgrading

This weapon cannot be crafted at a forge – you have to find, loot or buy it.

Improving at a grindstone: 1 × Chaurus Chitin. The Arcane Blacksmith perk doubles the improvement.

Tips and notes

  • Improve it with Chaurus Chitin at a grindstone. No Smithing perk boosts the gain. Chitin comes from chaurus, which tend to share caves with the Falmer.
  • Stronger variant: the Honed Falmer War Axe (13 base damage).
  • Bug: the regular version makes a sword sound when you draw it; the honed one does not.
