Water Stone

All-Maker Stone in western Solstheim where four Windhelm sailors stand entranced by Miraak’s mantra – freed during Cleansing the Stones for the Waters of Life blessing.

The Water Stone is one of the All-Maker Stones scattered across Solstheim, added with the Dragonborn expansion. It stands on the island’s western side, north of Bloodskal Barrow. Like the others, it has fallen under Miraak‘s influence, and the people around it are not here by choice.

What you’ll find

  • Four entranced sailors – Benkum, Hjalfar, Liesl and Palevius Lex. They came from Windhelm on shore leave, fell under Miraak’s spell and have stayed at the stone ever since.
  • Miraak’s Mantra – talk to any of them and they’ll just recite it back to you. Not exactly a cheerful shore leave.
  • The stone itself – once cleansed, it grants the blessing Waters of Life.

Quests

The Water Stone is part of Cleansing the Stones, in which you remove Miraak’s hold on every All-Maker Stone on the island. The quest opens up once you’ve learned the Bend Will shout, so there’s little point visiting with cleansing in mind before that.

Tips

The sailors are victims, not enemies, so keep your weapons sheathed – nothing here needs killing. Focus on the stone instead. Once you’ve freed it, the sailors snap out of their trance and walk off to the shore to wait for their ship, which is about as happy an ending as anyone gets on Solstheim.

Since all the All-Maker Stones are part of the same quest, it’s worth planning a route that hits this one together with the others in the west, such as the Earth Stone near Raven Rock. Less walking, more cleansing.

Good to know

Out of all the people Miraak has enthralled across the island, the Water Stone crew might be the unluckiest: they only stepped off their ship for a bit of shore leave and ended up chanting at a rock for who knows how long.
