Frossel

Riekling cave north-northwest of Skaal Village, home to barrel ambushes, a bizarre horse-cart shrine and good hunting for Hilund’s Riekling spears.

Frossel is a cave on Solstheim, added with the Dragonborn expansion, north-northwest of Skaal Village. Rieklings have moved in and made it their own, complete with a home-made religion. Visit for Riekling spears, a few odd trinkets and one of the strangest shrines on the island.

What you’ll find

  • Rieklings, including Riekling Chargers, and at least one Bristleback.
  • Barrels that are not just barrels – several Rieklings burst out of them as you get close.
  • In the third chamber, a group of Rieklings bowing before a cart with a horse effigy “pulling” it. Worship comes in many forms.
  • A claw trap on the way to the far east side of the cave, where a Riekling hut stands. Next to the hut is a box, and beside that an East Empire Company Strongbox on the ground.

Quests

Hilund’s Spears – Frossel is one of the better places to collect Riekling spears for Hilund in Skaal Village.

Notable items

  • Imperial War Horn.
  • East Empire Pendant.
  • Dibella Statue.
  • East Empire Company Strongbox near the hut in the far east room.

Tips

Treat every barrel as a suspect: approach with your weapon out and a ward or shield ready for the pop-out ambush. Watch your feet on the route east, since a claw trap guards the way to the hut. If you are doing Hilund’s Spears, loot every Riekling body – that is the whole point of the trip. The Chargers hit hard and fast, so dealing with them first keeps the fights manageable. Leave a little time to admire the cart shrine before you clear the room – it is not every day you see a congregation worshipping a wooden horse.

Good to know

Out in the wilderness you may meet a Reaver who grumbles that Rieklings invaded Frossel and made off with their treasure – right before deciding you are the next problem and attacking. The name Frossel reportedly means “frostbite” in Norwegian.
