Spriggan Matron

Taller, golden-glowing elder spriggans that guard Skyrim’s forests and sacred groves, heal themselves repeatedly and call animals to fight for them.

The Spriggan Matron is the bigger, tougher sister of the ordinary Spriggan. She haunts dense woodland and the natural caves of Skyrim, usually with a spriggan or two, or some bears and wolves, to keep intruders busy while she closes in. Players meet her when they go poking around groves and grottoes that the forest would prefer to keep to itself.

You can tell a matron from a regular spriggan at a glance. She has a golden glow instead of a green one, and a taller, heavier build in place of the slender spriggan silhouette. At level 18 with 445 health and 250 magicka, she is a clear step up from her smaller kin.

Where to find them

Variants

Matrons are one rank in the spriggan family. Below them stands the ordinary Spriggan; above them the Spriggan Earth Mother, and there is also the Burnt Spriggan.

Lore

Nobody in Skyrim seems sure where matrons come from. Much of the speculation ties them to Kynareth, because they act as protectors of the province’s natural sanctuaries.

Notes

Her attacks apply an effect listed in the Active Effects menu as “Spriggan Poison”, described as a sap-like poison that deals 0 points of damage over 10 seconds. In other words, it is harmless. The Taproot she carries and the Spriggan Sap she drops most of the time are useful alchemy ingredients.

Abilities & attacks

  • Melee strikes (39 damage) that apply a harmless “Spriggan Poison” effect
  • Leaf Blast
  • Call Creature: summons animals such as bears and wolves to fight for her
  • Heal spells: can fully restore her health several times, unlike a normal spriggan that does it only once

How to beat it

Fire is the answer. Matrons reportedly take 40% extra fire damage and tend to fold quickly under sustained flames, which matters because slow melee damage gives her time to heal back to full again and again. Deal with or avoid the bears and wolves she calls, but keep the pressure on the matron herself so her heals cannot catch up. Burst damage beats chip damage here.

Loot & harvestables

Taproot
Spriggan Sap (70%)
