Gunnar Stone-Eye

Elderly, glass-eyed Nord of Helgen who gets young Haming to safety during Alduin's attack and eventually to Froki's Shack.

Gunnar Stone-Eye is an old Nord villager who lived in Helgen before the town was burned to the ground. You’ll recognise him by his age and his glass eye – the source of his nickname, presumably.

Where to find them

He’s in Helgen during the opening of the game. When Alduin strikes, he’s near the spot where the boy Haming’s father, Torolf, is killed.

Quests

In Unbound, Hadvar tells Gunnar to take care of Haming while he goes off to find General Tullius, and Gunnar answers with a quick blessing. He does manage to get the boy out of danger, and Haming later ends up safe with his grandfather at Froki’s Shack. Whether Gunnar himself survives is never made clear.

Personality & relationships

We don’t see much of Gunnar, but one brave moment is enough to make him one of Helgen’s quiet heroes. According to the Creation Kit, he is the brother of Lod, though nothing in the game itself mentions it.

Good to know

The game files list his race as “Elder”, the generic old-person race, but his name points to him being a Nord. The name Gunnar is Norse in origin and means fighter or soldier.
