The Augur of Dunlain was once a brilliant Breton student at the College of Winterhold. According to Colette Marence he was an expert in every school of magic and especially gifted in Restoration. He pushed his studies too far, and somehow his soul fused with the magical energies around the College. What’s left of him is a disembodied, all-knowing presence that very few people like to talk about.
Where to find them
The Augur dwells in the Midden Dark, the deepest part of the Midden beneath the College. Bones, old bloodstains and his small chamber suggest the place may once have been his private laboratory.
Quests
Good Intentions: Quaranir sends you to consult him. The Augur warns that knowledge corrupts and consumes, mentions that Ancano came asking questions too, and finally tells you that you need the Staff of Magnus to look into the Eye without being blinded. That sets up The Staff of Magnus.
Restoration Ritual Spell: once you master Restoration, Colette sends you back down to him. To earn his approval, you strip off all your equipment and survive several ghosts hurling Destruction magic at you. Pass, and he declares you worthy.
Personality & relationships
He speaks entirely in ominous riddles about fate, knowledge and destruction. Tolfdir is the only mage willing to discuss him openly, and he uses the Augur as a grim example of his warning that magic will destroy those who can’t control it, in a very literal way.
Good to know
His speeches can’t be skipped, and if you walk away mid-conversation, you start again from the beginning. Get comfortable.
